At the beginning of March, storms covered Eastern Kentucky. As the rivers rose above typical flood levels, many residents of Breathitt and the surrounding counties were forced to evacuate to higher ground. The water continued to rise. The Lexington Herald Leader noted that the “North Fork [of the Kentucky River to] hit its crest overnight at about 39 feet, according to the National Weather Service”. As low-lying areas were drowned in the rising waves, many homes and businesses were damaged and even destroyed. Many people lost everything they owned.
In the wake of the devastation, KMBC has started a fundraiser to raise money for the flood victims in Breathitt County. We are hosting relief teams who are helping to repair the wreckage, and we are sending groups of staff and students out into the nearby communities to assist with cleanup.
We would love your help! We are still taking donations for our flood relief fund, which will be used to continue aiding our neighbors. We are also looking for people to participate in work teams. If you would like to volunteer or donate to help those impacted by the flood please call 1-800-879-5622!
