New Introduction to Photography Class!
Kentucky Mountain Bible College is excited to announce a new class: Introduction to Digital Photography! This one credit hour class will be offered online starting Fall 2020. Class will begin on August 31 and will continue for 9 weeks, concluding on October 31.
As an introductory course, it will center around gaining a rudimentary understanding of digital photography. The lab approach will be emphasized – while there will be light reading, YouTube tutorials, and video lectures, weekly assignments will involve actually shooting photographs and demonstrating proficiency in that week’s topic. Three main areas will be emphasized for three weeks each:
1. Camera Settings
2. Composition
3. Very Basic Processing.
Subtopics that will naturally come up in the class will include Equipment (camera, lenses, etc.), Presentation/Prints, Black & White, Formatting, RAW and JPEG images, and more.
The only curriculum materials required, including software and apps, will be made available online free of charge – there are no specific books or workbooks to purchase. That being said, it is highly recommended that each student have, or have access to, a digital camera with a viewfinder (not just a screen on the back). A tripod would also be helpful.
In this digital age, a basic understanding of digital photography is helpful to almost anyone. Even if one does not wish to pursue photography further, an understanding of the basics will help one to function better in a digital world. Plus, with multimedia becoming more common in the local church setting, those entering ministry will benefit from at least an introductory offering on the subject.
The Introduction to Digital Photography class will be taught by Scott Olson – a professional photographer for more than 40 years, a full-time senior pastor since 1993, and a U.S. Navy Veteran (1981-86). Olson graduated from the New York Institute of Photography in 1978. He also studied photography at the Maine Photographic Workshops (1979-80), and received dual certification as a Darkroom Lab Technician and in Fine Art Photographic Composition, while studying under renowned photographer Jerry Uelsmann. Olson has been a photographer for a number of different organizations and church districts over the years. His photos have been shown in art galleries in several states, and they have been published in various newspapers and magazines. He has been invited to present his workshops at several photography gatherings in Indiana and Iowa. He also has a fully-functioning studio, specializing in classic portraiture, and he is the sole proprietor of Third Day Imaging. Olson’s photographic Portfolios can be viewed at www.thirddayimaging.com.
